Leterme’s blunder gets 225,000 hits

25 July 2007

Last weekend Yves Leterme, when asked to sing the national anthem for Belgium’s national feast-day, got the Marseillaise and the Brabançonne mixed up. A group of surfers uploaded to YouTube the RTBf report of Leterme’s performance.

Although Leterme is an online success, he is way behind other politicians. In June the video of a seemingly drunk French president Nicolas Sarkozy, at a G8 press conference, got more than 1 million hits.

The runaway leader, however, is the inebriated Wallonian Budget Minister, Michel Daerden. After the local council elections, various videos of him on video sites such as YouTube, Dailymotion and Google Video were downloaded more than 1.3 million times.
