King Albert II breaks leg in fall

27 June 2007

BRUSSELS – King Albert II was hospitalised Tuesday after breaking his leg in a fall at his chateau on the outskirts of Brussels, the royal family announced.

The king, who turned 73 this month, fractured part of his femur, according to a statement.

Albert II underwent an operation later on Tuesday in which he was fitted with an artificial hip. Doctors say the procedure went smoothly. The king should be on his feet again in a few days, though his full recovery will take a few weeks.

His wife Queen Paola was at the king’s side at the Saint Jean hospital in Brussels.

Albert came to the throne in 1993 following the death of his older brother King Baudouin.
