BRUSSELS – Levels of juvenile delinquency have rocketed in some parts of Brussels, according to new figures.
Statistics provided by the Ixelles police, reveal that in two years the number of young people arrested shot up by 226 percent.
In 2002, out of 643 minors arrested, 19 were under 12 years old, 29 were between 12 and 14, 123 between 14 and 16, and 469 between 16-18.
In 2003, 1 454 minors were arrested in Ixelles, of which 968 were between 16 and 18, 339 between 14 and 16, 102 between 12 and 14 and 62 less than 12.
La Derniere Heure points out that these figures only show how many arrests were made and do not show the full scale of the problem.
Youth crimes focus on car theft, muggings, drug abuse and vandalism.
