Jacques Simonet dead at 43

BRUSSELS – The liberal mayor of Anderlecht, Jacques Simonet, has died. He was 43-years-old and died of a heart attack.

Simonet served as state secretary for European Affairs in 2003 and 2004 under the Verhofstadt II government. He then served as minister president of the Brussels region.

Jacques Simonet was the son of the late Henri Simonet. His father was vice president of the European Commission for four years and also served as mayor of Anderlecht.
