BRUSSELS – A study has begun into suicide rates within the Belgian police force, it was reported on Tuesday.
La Derniere Heure said the federal police’s personnel manager had opened an internal investigation into the reasons why officers took their own lives.
Alain Duchatelet wants the investigation to focus particularly on the Brussels force where three officers have committed suicide within as many months.
Officers have been asked 216 questions on their work conditions and on their physical and mental health.
Duchatelet believes there is a serious problem in the police, which he believes could be due to “excessive discipline” and tensions between different types of police forces, which were recently brought within the same structure.
