Incriminating testimony on asylum centre

15 March 2007

BRUSSELS – Pressure is put on the medical team at the closed asylum centre in Vottem when it tries to provide independent medical care, Le Soir reports.

Doctor Jean-Paul Meex and a colleague, who was dismissed in June 2001, confirm violations of medical ethics which had already been reported by nurse Leone Loawo.

The doctors also confirm that the management of the closed asylum centre put pressure on them to violate professional secrecy.

“The Immigration Service asked me to hand over the medical dossiers of people who were supposed to be repatriated. I refused to do so. People who are ill could certainly not be deported,” the doctor said.
