BRUSSELS – Belgian tennis player Justine Henin-Hardenne beat the world number one women’s player at the Australian Open on Tuesday.
Hardenne, who was the eighth seed, won the quarter-final against American Lindsay Davenport, 2-6, 6-2 and 6-3.
She will now go on to play the Russian Maria Sharapova in the semi-finals.
Her victory against Davenport means the American player has lost her world number one ranking. That will now go to Amelie Mauresmo, if she wins the final, or to Belgium’s other big female tennis star, Kim Clijsters.
Clijsters is to play Martina Hingis in the quarter-finals on Wednesday. Clijsters, who lost to Henin in the 2004 Open final, is carrying injuries but is the favourite for Wednesday.
