Hate mail sent to foreigners

17 January 2005

BRUSSELS – Threatening letters have been sent to immigrant shopkeepers and restaurant owners in Belgium.

Traders in Ypres and Courtrai, as well as two pitta shop owners in Antwerp province have all received hate mail post-marked from Herentals, reported the Sunday edition of Het Nieuwsblad.

An Egyptian pitta shop owner in Hoogstraten and an Egyptian Belgian living in Berlaar have both received letters.

An immigrant who manages a pitta restaurant in Courtrai received a similar letter last week.

Another pitta shop manager in Ypres also received hate mail.

All the letters contained threats such as: “Pack your cases or die.”
