Half of parents suffer from stress

Published on 30/01/2009

The figures come from a survey carried out on behalf of the Flemish Families Union (Gezinsbond) and the Flemish Equality Minister Kathleen Van Brempt (socialist).

A total of 4,017 men and women with children were questioned about the levels of stress they suffer as a result of combining family life with work.

97% of those questioned were in paid employment.

44% of mothers and fathers taking part in the survey said that they felt stressed on an average working day.

13% said that they suffered a lot of stress, while 31% said that they suffered from mild stress.

Women and single parents suffer the most from stress.

The mornings are cited as being an especially stressful time for parents.

Most fathers feel that the evening rush of cooking, eating, helping the children with their homework and housework is relaxing.

Mothers are twice as likely to suffer a lot stress during the evening rush than fathers.

Remarkably perhaps, the number of children in a family has little influence on the levels of stress suffered by parents.

The Flemish Families Union calls for greater workplace flexibility for parents with more teleworking and leave to be granted to employees with children at times when they are needed in the home.
