BRUSSELS – MP Guido Tastenhoye (47) from Deurne died in the Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-Middelares hospital in Antwerp last night. He had served in Parliament for ultra-nationalist anti-immigration party Vlaams Belang since 1999. Before entering politics he worked for years as a journalist for the Gazet van Antwerpen.
Guido Tastenhoye had been struggling with serious health problems for some time. He was admitted to the clinic repeatedly over the past few months. For this reason he had also resigned from the Antwerp municipal council and the district council of Deurne.
Tastenhoye, a German scholar by profession, was originally from Hoeilaart. This was partly why he was so interested in the problems faced by the Flemish in Vlaams-Brabant and the Gallicising of the Brussels Periphery, a topic on which he published two books.
He was a member of the parliamentary committee for Foreign Affairs and the advisory committee on European Affairs, in addition to his concerns about immigration problems and the multicultural society.
Guido Tastenhoye served on the district council of Deurne from 2001 to 2006. He secured 6,962 votes as leading candidate in the elections in October 2006.
