BRUSSELS – A year’s guarantee must legally be given with used cars from 1 January, it was reported on Thursday.

The Belgian car industry has said it is fully ready to implement the change in two weeks time.

Federauto – the Belgian Confederation of Car Commerce – and car organisations Touring and VTB-VAB have introduced a new sales contract for second-hand cars.

The document includes a check-list of 96 points, which the organisations claim will allow buyers to have a clear idea of the real state of a vehicle.

“This check-list is a totally new concept which is designed to guarantee the standard of the item and the fullest transparency,” said a spokesman for Federauto.
