BRUSSELS – The number of people in Belgium newly infected with the HIV/Aids virus has passed the 1,000-a-year mark for the first time, it was announced on Tuesday.
Belgium’s Scientific Institute for Public Health (ISSP) said the country achieved the grim new record in 2003, when 1,032 people were diagnosed with the virus.
Between 15,830 and 16,922 people living in Belgium have been diagnosed with HIV/Aids since the disease first came to worldwide attention in the early 1980s.
So far 3,173 of those people have gone on to develop full-blown Aids.
The ISSP report did not say how many people have died from Aids in Belgium.
