Greece mulls Belgian extradition request for jihadist suspect

Greek prosecutors will consider on Monday a Belgian request for the extradition of an Algerian with suspected links to the jihadist cell dismantled by Belgian security forces last week.

The 33-year-old was arrested on Saturday in the Greek capital Athens and police said he would be brought before prosecutors on Monday.

According to a police source, the suspect had served jail time in Greece on a robbery conviction but was released nearly a year ago.

A second suspect was released from custody without any charge on Sunday, the source said.

The jihadist cell, which was plotting to kill police in Belgium, was dismantled in an anti-terror raid in the east of the country on Thursday that left two suspects dead.

Belgian media has named Abdelhamid Abaaoud, a 27-year-old Belgian of Moroccan descent who remains at large, as the presumed mastermind of the cell.

The foiled attacks in Belgium have led to arrests in several European countries.
