Government to get green wheels

2 February 2004

BRUSSELS – The Belgian government has pledged to replace its entire fleet of official cars with the latest environmentally-friendly vehicles.

It says it hopes the move will encourage other Belgians to switch to cars that use cleaner fuels and are less polluting.

Rather hopefully, the government has also said it belives the move will help Belgium respect its commitments to the struggling Kyoto global warming agreement.

Critics have been quick to point out however that as major industrial polluters like the USA, Russia and Australia have all said they will not respect Kyoto, anything a small country like Belgium tries to do to help revive the deal will have little or no real effect on global greenhouse gas emissions.
