Future King gets seal of approval

3 December 2003

BRUSSELS – Eighty percent of Belgians believe Prince Philippe is ready to take over as King, but 77 percent reject the idea of an early abdication by King Albert II.

The Prince’s qualities most appreciated according to the Soir magazine survey were his sympathy, courtesy and seriousness.

The survey showed that Flemings and people under the age of 30 were the most critical of Philippe, next in line to the Belgian throne.

For eight out of ten of the survey’s respondents, the Prince’s duties essentially consisted of representing Belgium overseas.

His efforts in his own country on sustainable development and community exchanges were largely ignored however.
