ATHENS – Two Dutchmen and a Belgian man are planning to travel from Athens in Greece to Amsterdam in the Netherlands by pedalo. A pedalo is a form of water transport powered by pedals.
The three men will depart from the Greek capital on Sunday afternoon. Their journey will take them across the open sea to Italy, up the Tiber river to Rome and along the Rhône river into France.
In the final phase of the journey they will travel by sea along the Belgian and Dutch coastlines. They hope to complete the 4500-kilometre distance in three months and, by so doing, to raise money for a holiday home for sick children in the Netherlands, near the Efteling amusement park.
The pedalo is not the kind usually seen in amusement parks, rivers and city canals. It is 11 meters long and almost two metres wide.
It is fitted with a GPS navigation system, as well as a radar reflector to warn nearby ships of its presence. The electronic apparatuses will be powered by solar panels and a small windmill.
The three men will take turns to pedal, two at a time, around the clock.
