Free WIFI on Flemish trams

The Flemish public transport company De Lijn is able to provide this service thanks to a partnership with private sponsor ‘Hello Bank!’.

For technical reasons – the trams make use of the 3G/4G Mobistar network – only low-floor trams can be equipped with WIFI for the time being.

Right now, 15 WIFI trams are operating in the city.

By the end of November, both Ghent and Antwerp will have 45 WIFI trams in service.

Those wanting to make use of the free service, can simply register on the vehicle.

After inputting a phone number on www.lijnnet.be and choosing a login, they will be sent a unique access code by text.

Afterwards, users will have 250 megabyte of data available to them each month.

Browsing porn, extremist websites and downloading illegal files will however be impossible.

“We’ve been testing WIFI on some trams over the few past years, but now we’re opting for a test on a greater scale”, said Roger Kesteloot, CEO of de Lijn.

“With these trams, we want to offer an extra service to our customers. We’re also making it easier for them to consult our real time travel apps, as they need a data connection to use them.”
