‘Free’ bank loans head for Belgium

BRUSSELS – An Islamic bank is to start lending money in Belgium without charging any interest, it was reported on Thursday.

According to Flemish newspapers “Gazet van Antwerpen” and “Het Belang van Limburg,” the loans are the first of their kind in western Europe.

René Passieux , the director of the unnamed Islamic bank told the two newspapers that he expected the new service to prove extremely popular.

“We hope to attract around 500,000 customers by the end of the year,” he said.
