BRUSSELS — France was the most popular vacation destination for Belgians this summer, though those who opted for organised tours were most attracted to Spain, said new figures revealed Friday.
Spain secured top billing in its category despite a 20 percent decrease since 2003, according to a report in Metro newspaper. This was followed by France, Turkey, Greece, Tunisia and Egypt.
Spain replaced France as the most popular summer holiday destination for all Europeans. Greece, the US, Italy, the Netherlands and Ireland are also popular.
Portugal’s attraction also grew after hosting the 2004 European football championships.
Overall, most Europeans also prefer to spend their summer at beach resorts.
For Germans, Europe’s ‘champion’ travellers, the most popular resorts were found in Italy.
With around 50 percent of Germans choosing to holiday abroad, Austria and Turkey were the next most popular countries.
Brits tend to opt for the more far-flung options of New Zealand, Bulgaria, Croatia and Tasmania.
The Dutch chose to stay closer to home, heading first for France, then Spain and Turkey.
The Spanish are the biggest homebirds, however, with only 8.8 percent heading abroad and the rest choosing to enjoy their country’s own sunshine.
