Fourniret victim’s mother launches EU support network

28 July 2004

BRUSSELS – The mother of Elisabeth Brichet, the Belgian girl murdered by French serial killer Michel Fourniret, on Wednesday launched a new EU wide support network for victims of paedophiles.

Marie-Noelle Bouzet announced the new initiative at a press conference held just four days after her daughter’s funeral.

She said she had decided to create the organisation because she felt victims and potential victims were not properly protected in many EU countries.

“We live in a democratic society. This is the alibi that is constantly used so that we, the victims, accept to pay the price,” she said.

“The price is a heavy one: it’s the destruction of our beloved children,” she added.

The precise role the new association will play is not yet clear, but Bouzet’s lawyer said the group would try to make society more aware of the problems faced by victims of paedophiles and stalkers.

Fourniret has admitted abducting Elisabeth Brichet on 20 December 1989 in Saint-Servais.

Her body was found at the Sautou chateau in the French Ardennes on 3 July this year, following a confession from Fourniret’s estranged wife Monique Olivier.

Her funeral took place in the Belgian city of Namur on Saturday 24 July.
