Fourniret to stay in Dinant – for now

19 August 2004

BRUSSELS – A European arrest warrant to extradite serial killer Michel Fourniret to France has been approved but will not be effective immediately, it emerged on Thursday.

A court in Dinant has given the go-ahead for French authorities to repatriate the Frenchman for questioning over the murder of two girls in 2000 and 2001.

Fourniret’s lawyers had tried to contest a previous decision to deport him at a Liege court but failed in their bid.

But Fourniret will remain in Belgian custody until the end of a Belgian investigation into the rape and murder of Elisabeth Brichet and the abduction of a teenager from Ciney.

Belgian police are also probing his links to another attempted abduction in Gedinne and the possible killing of a young au pair in 1993.

Fourniret denies this last murder and the girl has been neither identified nor found.

The Frenchman, who has so far confessed to ten murders on both sides of the Franco-Belgian border, is currently undergoing a psychiatric examination.
