Four out of ten Belgians don’t wear seatbelts

2 June 2004

BRUSSELS – Too many Belgian drivers and passengers still do not wear seatbelts, the Belgian Transport Minister said on Wednesday.

Unveiling a major road safety campaign, minister Bert Anciaux said that four out of ten drivers and passengers do not belt up when they set off on a car journey.

“The seat belt should be a reflex. Too many motorists still look at it as an option,” said Anciaux.

The new awareness campaign will include posters and television advertisements designed to encourage drivers to use seatbelts.

Belgian road safety experts estimate that if nine out of ten drivers and passengers wore seatbelts the number of people killed on the country’s roads every year could fall by around 200.
