Flanders wants recourse to Court

10 July 2007

BRUSSELS – Flanders wants to be able to appeal directly to the European Court of Justice, says Flemish Foreign Minister Geert Bourgeois.

He spoke today in Ghent with the Basque minister president Juan José Ibarretxe. Both Flanders and the Basque Country are regions with a great deal of autonomy and their own legislatures.

“The Basque Country may levy its own taxes,” Bourgeois said after the talks. “But it envies Flanders because we have international powers, even on the European level.”

Flanders would like to be president next year of the REGLEG, a political collaboration of 74 states and regions that have legislative powers. Flanders will certainly have the support of the Basque country, Ibarretxe said.

Both regions want as much autonomy as possible and will launch new initiatives together on the European level.
