Belgium takes silver in Hockey World League

However, the Belgians can be pleased with their performance. The silver medal is our country’s men’s hockey team’s first medal at a World Class tournament since Belgium took bronze in the men’s hockey competition at the Olympic Games in Antwerp back in 1920.
The first quarter ended goalless.

The Red Lions finally cracked under Australian pressure early in the second quarter with Jeremy Hayward putting the Aussies one-up on 16 minutes. Australia’s second goal came in the third quarter (on 37 minutes) through Matthew Dawson.

The fourth quarter was unique in that it saw the Belgians dominant. However, it wasn’t until the final seconds of play that Simon Gougnard scored for the Red Lions, making for a final score of 2-1 to Australia.
