Five-year-old killed in fire

10 April 2007

BRUSSELS – A five-year-old child was killed in a fire on a farm in Bièvre (Zuid-Namen) in the early hours of Tuesday morning. The parents and two other children managed to escape the blaze.

The fire broke out in the kitchen of the remote farmhouse at about 2 am. The deputy public prosecutor in Dinant says that the fire was an accident, though the exact cause is not yet known.

It is suspected that an overheated heating system and a large amount of straw in a shed adjoining the home could have caused the blaze. The expert who investigated the scene will release more information in the course of the day.

The authorities in Dinant have reported that the parents and two children escaped when the fire broke out. The five-year-old was left behind however. Despite the rapid arrival of the fire brigade the child could not be saved.
