BRUSSELS – A cow from an 18 animal herd on a farm near the Belgian town of Dottignes has been diagnosed with ‘mad cow disease’, it was confirmed on Tuesday.
The discovery marks the first case of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) to be detected in Belgium this year.
The Belgian food safety agency AFSCA said three calves from the infected cow had also been traced and they would be destroyed along with the mother.
