Firemen’s strike gets out of hand

28 February 2007

BRUSSELS – Two police officers and three demonstrators were hurt in this morning’s protest by firemen. Two to three thousand firemen took part in the protest. They are demanding better training and better contracts.

A delegation of the protestors was received by the Minister of Home Affairs Patrick Dewael.

The incidents took place at about 10.45 a.m. this morning. Several police officers on site to monitor safety were hit when protestors started throwing fire hose connection pieces. The situation has calmed down in the meantime.

One police officer was brought to hospital, a second suffered only minor injuries.

The turnout was much greater than the 1,000 people expected by the trade unions. Both volunteer and professional firemen came from all over the country to take part in the protest.

The firemen are mainly demanding that all firemen be given the same remuneration and labour conditions.
