Fatal shooting on Brussels ring

The E19 motorway had to be closed for a while on Monday morning as the police continued their investigation into the incident.

Two vehicles from the federal police’s special intervention squad were in hot pursuit of an Audi in which two people wanted by the police were travelling. The incident happened at 4am.

The police succeeded in stopping the Audi at the point where the E19 motorway joins the Brussels orbital ring road. An officer who felt threatened opened fire, killing the Audi’s driver. The man died at the scene.

The passenger then attempted to escape by jumping off a viaduct. He suffered serious injury and had to be taken to hospital where he is in a critical condition.

The police have not yet divulged the identity of those involved in the incident. The E19 motorway has been reopened to traffic.
