KIELDRECHT – A 46-year-old woman and her 8-year-old son died in a family tragedy in Kieldrecht on Sunday.
The child was initially reported to be a girl, but the public prosecutor’s office in Dendermonde has corrected this information.
The mother killed the child and then took her own life, the authorities in Dendermonde report. The bodies were found Sunday in the family’s home on the Singel in Kieldrecht. The 46-year-old woman had hanged herself after presumably strangling the boy.
The woman was divorced and struggled with emotional problems, public prosecutor’s spokesperson Theo Byl has confirmed. She had custody of her son. The single woman did not have any other children. The authorities are investigating whether the woman’s psychological history was at the root of the incident. An investigation of the woman’s home is expected to shed more light on the matter.
