EU welcomes Russia-Ukraine gas deal

MOSCOW- The European Commission, however, reserves judgment until Russian gas actually reaches Europe again, which is due to happen on Monday.

The agreement was announced at the end of lengthy talks in Moscow between Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart Yulia Tymoshenko.

Russia is to grant Ukraine a 20 percent discount on gas imports for 2009, and in return Ukraine will hold the tariff for gas transit to Europe at the 2008 level.

From 2010 both prices will shift to European market levels.

The Russian gas company Gazprom cut of gas supplies to Ukraine at the beginning of January, because the country refused to agree to a doubling in the price.

The dispute has left a number of Eastern European countries without gas for more than a week.
