EU district to face traffic problems

11 October 2004

BRUSSELS – Drivers are being advised to avoid Rue Belliard in the heart of Brussels’ European quarter next weekend as work on the capital’s new regional rail network, the RER, is set to cause major congestion in the area.

Belgian rail operator SNCB said on Monday that driving conditions are likely to be difficult on Rue Belliard both this coming weekend and the weekend afterwards.

“For the weekends of the 16-17 October and the 23 and 24 October the three left hand lanes [of Rue Belliard] will be closed. The two right hand lanes will still be useable,” SNCB said.

The disruption is being caused by a new rail tunnel that is being dug as part of the RER scheme.
