Eastern European gang rounded up

28 March 2007

BRUSSELS – A large police action Wednesday morning resulted in the arrest of 69 people suspected of involvement in a criminal gang.

The suspects are of Eastern European origin, says the federal public prosecution department, which coordinated the investigation.

The gang was highly organised and had committed many burglaries and incidents of bank card fraud involving the illegal copying of bank card information.

More than 400 police officers carried out 40 raids of homes in Veurne, Liege, Brussels, Bruges, Antwerp and Dendermonde. The focal point of the action was in Charleroi however, where the gang had its base of operations.

A large quantity of stolen goods was confiscated in the raids, including jewellery, cars, mobile telephones and stereo equipment.
