Dutroux transfers jail for car-crime trial

BRUSSELS – Convicted paedophile and serial killer Marc Dutroux has been transferred to a new jail.

Dutroux, who was sentenced to life imprisonment last summer for three murders, kidnapping
and rape, was being held at Arlon prison.

Officials have said he is being held at Ittre prison while he awaits trial for
the trafficking of vehicles.

Back in 1998, the Liege and Neufchateau judicial authorities said they felt the car allegations should not form part of Dutroux’s main trial.

He must, therefore, face another trial for these allegations at Nivelles court.

It has been speculated that, even after the trial, Dutroux is to serve the remainder of
his sentence at Ittre prison. The high-security facility is more modern than Arlon.

It opened in May 2002 with 420 places, including 384 individual cells, compared to
over-populated Arlon, which has just 76 cells for 130 inmates.

So far, however, officials have said Dutroux’s stay at Ittre is temporary.
