BRUSSELS – On 9 June the law on dual nationality will come into effect. Belgians who naturalise as US or Canadian citizens for instance will retain their Belgian nationality.

Until now those who naturalised abroad automatically lost Belgian citizenship.

The new law applies for those naturalising to any other nationality, except for ten European countries. These exceptions are due to international formalities. The new provision is contained in a decree from Justice Minister Laurette Onkelinx.
