Don’t miss Belgian foreign-language Oscar nominee

A Belgian movie never won an Oscar as best foreign-language film, and this one may set a first, although competition is tough. "Take your chance to see why this dark horse sneaked in and why it just might win", the LA Times writes.

Don't miss Belgian foreign-language Oscar nominee

Directed by Felix Van Groeningen, the film brings the tragic story of a couple that lose their child as a result of cancer. Tattoo artist Veerle Baetens and Johan Heldenberg star.

‘The Broken Circle Breakdown’ is to face tough competition in the Oscar race from ‘The Great Beauty’ (Italy), ‘The Hunt’ (Denmark), ‘The Missing Picture’ (Cambodia) and ‘Omar’ (Palestine).

It’s the 7th time a Belgian movie has been nominated for an Oscar as Best Foreign Film, but at previous occasion the Oscar always slipped through Belgian hands. If it is up to the LA Times, ‘The Broken Circle breakdown’ has a good chance of winning: "Director Felix Van Groeningen intermingles elements in intriguing ways as the film delves into the romance of music and the romance of love. (…) Baetens and Heldenbergh are wonderful to watch in their intense coming together and their sad breaking apart in the face of an unbearable tragedy, a relationship going in a full but heartbreaking circle with no better accompaniment than a haunting bluegrass band."
