Doctors on call can double park

24 November 2004

BRUSSELS – Belgian doctors paying emergency visits to patients are to be given the green light to park illegally, it was announced on Wednesday.

The Brussels’ attorney general has agreed a deal with doctor representatives from Brussels and Brabant to ensure they won’t risk fines while on call.

A document has been drawn up spelling out the principle of ‘SINGE’ – ‘Stationnement illicite non genant’ – acceptable illegal parking.

The text is still to be finalised, including the details of the type of badge or sticker doctors will have to display on their cars.

However, the deal has already been described as “historic” and could pave the way for a similar legal measure in other towns.

On-call doctors parking illegally will have to meet certain conditions, such as leaving at least one metre of space on a pavement.
