Dehaene to write new EU report

The former Belgian Premier Jean-Luc Dehaene (Flemish Christian democrat) is to draw up a report on the Treaty of Lisbon.

Mr Dehaene, a European lawmaker, will compile the report on behalf of the European Parliament.

The Lisbon Treaty replaced the European Constitution that was rejected by the people of France and the Netherlands.

The new treaty deals with the relations between the European Parliament, the European Commission and the heads of state and government.

Mr Dehaene hopes to finalise his report either before or after the summer holidays.

The new treaty should become operational on 1 January 2009.
