Cyclist run over by train

27 February 2007

BRUSSELS – A cyclist was hit by a train at a railroad crossing on the Rooistraat in Diepenbeek at about 2.30 a.m. Tuesday morning.

The authorities in Hasselt have determined that the cyclist most likely fell from his bike onto the tracks before the train hit him. The victim was a student in his twenties. Nothing could be done for him after the accident.

The local police are trying to trace the man’s identity. A Spanish identification card was found near the site of the accident but the police are still trying to verify whether the card belonged to the man.
