BRUSSELS — Cyclist Frank Vandenbroucke has decided to appeal in the Supreme Court in Brussels against the EUR 250,000 fine imposed for possession of doping products.
Ghent Court imposed the fine on the disgraced cyclist on 23 June after drugs were found at Vandenbroucke’s house in a police raid in February 2002.
“Frank gave the order today to apply for cassation,” newspaper ‘Het Laatste Nieuws’ quoted lawyer Johnny Maeschalck saying.
The cyclist was initially sentenced by the trial court in Dendermonde in December 2004 to a community work order of 200 hours. However, the appeals court ruled that a fine was more appropriate.
It means Vandenbroucke was ruled to be in breach of federal drugs laws rather than a Flemish sports ordinance. He was judged as a drug user rather than a sportsman.
