Crisis remittance to help Belgian self-employed

This was decided by the council of ministers on Friday. For those who have already declared bankruptcy, insurance is already available.

Due to the economic crisis many self-employed people in Belgium are having a difficult time keeping their heads above water. During the first three months of the year 2,350 people who are self-employed filed for bankruptcy. This is 28 percent more than in the same period last year. Those who have effectively declared bankruptcy already have the right to benefits for 12 months.

The council of ministers decided on Friday to help people who are on the verge of bankruptcy. Self-employed people who have economic problems can request a remittance for six months. The ‘head of the family’ is entitled to €1,100/month; single people are entitled to €920/month. There are a few conditions to be eligible for the special remittance: for example turn-over must have dropped by at least 50 percent.
