Consumers are buying Made in Belgium
Last year many food products became more expensive. As a result consumers have changed their habits.
Piet vanthemsche of the Farmers Union says: "It’s strange, the sale of fresh foods has risen because people are cooking at home a lot more.
"Secondly, expensive products are losing ground. It’s the case with fresh fish and for some types of meat."
Consumers are also opting more for home grown products. 80% to 90 % of dairy products, vegetables, fruit and meat sold are Belgian.
"This is because people are more confident about such products, the quality of these products, but also out of concern about the survival of small businesses and a general concern not to buy produce that has to be transported far."
The distribution sector and the Farmers’ Union hope to increase this share even further. Traders are receiving promotional material to highlight Belgian produce.
