Condom sales falling in Belgium

7 July 2004

BRUSSELS – The number of condoms sold in Belgium has fallen alarmingly over the past year, according to official figures released on Wednesday.

Flemish newspaper De Morgen reported that new figures from Belgium’s national public health institute the INS show that sales of condoms in May and June dropped by eleven and a half percent compared with the same period last year.

The newspaper contacted three of the main manufacturers of condoms in Belgium, Durex, Zazoo and Smile, who all confirmed that sales had fallen but would not say by how much.

Condoms can help stop the spread of sexually transmitted diseases including HIV/AIDS.
