BRUSSELS — The Belgian coast was a popular destination on Sunday as the weather warmed up again after last week’s thunderstorms.

Combined with the long weekend for the Flemish Community Holiday on 11 July, a large number of people flocked to the Flemish coast, giving the region its first ‘top day’ of the summer.

The annual holiday period started for a large number of businesses this weekend, leading to a busier day along the coast.

Traffic jams were reported on roads leading to the coast in the morning, but problems were considered minimal.

Delays were reported again on the E40 on Sunday evening, Flemish broadcaster VRT reported.

Some 27,000 people took the train to the coast. Rail operator NMBS-SNCB deployed six extra trains in the morning and three in the evening.
