Christmas tree arrives on Brussels’ market square

The tree that is a gift from this year’s European City of Culture Riga (Latvia) arrived at around 3am on Thursday morning.

Five hours later it was upright in the position that it will be in until the New Year. .

The Christmas tree on the Grote Markt normally comes from Wallonia. However, this year the Latvian offered Brussels a tree instead.

The City of Riga’s representative at the EU Inga Barisa told journalists that “Latvia will take over the presidency of the Council of the European Union at the beginning of 2015.

So this is a great way of ended our year as City of Culture and beginning the presidency.”

Latvia is also providing the decorations for the tree. The tree should be decorated by the weekend.
