Changes in November

Flemish Christian democrat and former Euro MP Marianne Thyssen succeeds Flemish liberal Karel De Gucht, who held both the Trade and International Development portfolios.

Ms Thyssen is the new Work and Social Affairs Commissioner.

The installation of the new commission coincides with a further harmonisation of fines for businesses that flout the EU’s competition rules.

In future the Belgian competition authority will levy heftier fines, especially on businesses that flout competition rules for a lengthy period of time.

Fines will be multiplied by the number of years that competition rules have been flouted.
