Catholic Education Authority supports abuse investigation

The Head of the Flemish Catholic Education Authority Mieke Van Hecke (photo) has said in an interview with the daily ‘De Standaard’ that "I stand behind the call to reconstruct the past."

In Saturday’s edition of the newspaper a number of victims spoke of how they had suffered or witnessed extreme physical violence in numerous Catholic institutions such as homes, schools and boarding schools.

The incidents were said to have persisted until the 1980’s.

During the weekend, the child psychologist Peter Adriaenssens suggested setting up a commission to investigate the alleged abuse.

This idea received the immediate support of the Flemish Welfare Minister Jo Vandeurzen. The Head of the Catholic Education authority Mieke Van Hecke has now said that she also is in favour of setting up a commission.
