Carjacking in Ghent

12 June 2007

GHENT – Four masked men used a pistol to threaten two men and steal the Mercedes they were driving in Ghent on Monday night. The authorities in Ghent have confirmed this.

The carjacking occurred at 2.15 am Tuesday morning on the Alfons Braeckmanlaan in the Ghent submunicipality of Sint-Amandsberg. The Mercedes S500 was driven by a 28-year-old man from Berlare. The owner of the car, a 54-year-old man from Ghent, was sitting in the passenger seat at the time.

The perpetrators, who approached in a car with French plates, first passed the Mercedes and then forced it to pull over onto the grassy shoulder. Four men in ski masks came up to the car and threatened the two men inside.

At least one of the men was armed, say the authorities. They pulled the two men from the car and fled with the Mercedes. The carjackers have still not been located.
