Call for more effective expulsion policy

2 September 2004

BRUSSELS – Interior Minister Patrick Dewael is seeking to improve the way Belgium expels illegal immigrants and failed asylum seekers, it was reported on Thursday.

Several Flemish newspapers reported that Dewael is to talk with Belgian diplomats abroad about the problem of individuals expelled from Belgium, but then denied entry back into their own countries.

The situation mostly arises with asylum seekers from African countries.

The minister is also meeting with prison representatives to encourage them to persuade their lawyers not to drag their feet in legal procedures for clients requesting asylum.
