BRUSSELS — Belgian and expat motorists have been warned to expect busy domestic and foreign roads during the coming festive season.

The Flemish motorists association VAB said on Thursday the roads will be at their busiest during weekends. It is especially expected to be busy in Germany on Friday.

In Belgium, the VAB said Christmas traffic congestion will primarily develop as the public hits the streets for last-minute shopping on Friday afternoon and night and again on Saturday.

Traffic congestion will also be caused by motorists visiting family over the festive season, newspaper ‘Het Nieuwsblad’ reported. Belgian residents are also leaving for winter snow holidays.

The New Year’s traffic problems are expected to be relatively minor. However, motorists have been advised to take into account other people doing their New Year’s grocery and party shopping.

However, the pressure on the nation’s roads from departing holidaymakers is expected to be limited.

It will be a slightly busier weekend than normal. Saturday 31 December will be noticeable for its slightly busier roads at night due to crowds of partygoers.

Traffic congestion is also expected in the winter sport countries due to the festive season and holiday motorists.
