BELGIUM – Street musicians in Brussels will soon have to sit for an examination to apply for a monthly permit to play in the streets.
Buskers will have to play before a jury of musicians before they will be granted a permit to play in the streets.
The decision was reached at a city council meeting.
Street musicians in Brussels have been getting the necessary permit to play in the streets of the capital from a private company. The city of Brussels has decided now however to take over this task.
The Brussels authorities are planning to grant 50 permits every month. This is 20 more than before. The new measure is intended to increase the quality of the music played by street musicians in Brussels.
Brussels town councillor Els Ampe thinks the measure is superfluous. "At the moment this isn’t a big problem. I don’t like this kind of over-regulation. These days you need a paper for just about anything- even to go to the loo!"
